20030610b: Reviewing previous lessons - archiving old Progress Files

In future versions of TCM Herbal Tutor, we plan to modify the Study Advisor so that it will be easier to go back to more basic levels for review. For example, if you've studied and advanced to a level where you know all of the syndromes, then go away for a few weeks, you may wish to do a bit of review using only the basic syndromes (8 Principal Patterns, Fundamental Processes, Pernicous Evils). Currently, the Study Advisor does not allow you to do this.

There is a relatively simple way that you can get around this problem, and that is to periodically create copies of your main progress file and rename these copies, using the following procedure:

  1. The main progress file that you normally use should be called something like "JohnDoe-MAIN".

  2. After completing each lesson in the Lesson Plan that involves use of the TCM Herbal Tutor software, save (update) your progress file as usual to the file "JohnDoe-MAIN".

  3. Then in your operating system's file directory, make a duplicate of "JohnDoe-MAIN"; rename this duplicated file "JohnDoe-Lesson#XX", where XX is the Lesson number (i.e., "A-02") that you have just completed.

  4. Continue to use the progress file "JohnDoe-MAIN" as you work on subsequent lessons in the Lesson Plan.

  5. If you ever wish to review old material (for example, going back to Lesson A-02 to review just the 8 Principal Patterns), when starting TCM Herbal Tutor, choose "JohnDoe-Lesson#A-02" when asked to choose which progress file to use for that session. (Any quizzes you complete during this session will not affect the scores in your MAIN progress file.)

  6. After you are satisfied with your review, and wish to resume the course, quit the TCM Herbal Tutor, restart it, and be sure to choose "JohnDoe-MAIN" as the progress file for this and future sessions. ("JohnDoe-MAIN" is the progress file that you will eventually submit to qualify for Level-1 certification.)
