Health Freedom issues; Ron Paul, U.S. presidential candidacy
[an article I wrote for people who are especially interested in health care issues, access to alternative health, FDA abuses, government interference in the right to choose health care options, etc. There is a list of links near end of article that many might find useful.]

Ron Paul's insistence on adhering to Constitutional rule of law makes him a rarity among politicians. His stated beliefs are consistent with his 10-term record of service in Congress, another rarity among politicians who change their rhetoric with the direction of the wind. He:
*Has consistently voted against the Iraq war.
*Has voted against the Patriot Act and related unconstitutional legislation.
       *Voted against regulating the Internet.
*Has never voted to raise taxes and supports abolishing the
unconstitutional IRS and the Federal Reserve system.
*Has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
*Has never voted to raise congressional pay.
*Has never taken a government-paid junket and has refused to accept
    a Congressional pension.
*Has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
*Has never voted for federal restriction on gun ownership.
*Has consistenty opposed international treaties such as NAFTA and CAFTA
    that erode American sovereignty.
*Opposes the use of torture, insisting it is a clear violation of the
    Bill of Rights.
*Consistently believes in the right to life and opposes the death penalty
as well as abortion and all forms of killing not done in self-defense.
*Supports allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes and is in
favor of allowing industrial hemp production.
*Supports alternative sentencing as an alternative to mandatory minimum
    prison terms for non-violent crimes.

Foreign policy

Following is a reference list of useful websites that have information about Dr. Paul's philosophy of foreign policy. Several people have asked me for more information about this topic, to address the criticism leveled at Paul for his supposed "isolationism". See especially the 2nd item in the list below.

    The Original American Foreign Policy
    by Ron Paul
"Noninterventionism is not isolationism. Nonintervention simply means America does not interfere militarily, financially, or covertly in the internal affairs of other nations. It does not mean that we isolate ourselves; on the contrary, our founders advocated open trade, travel, communication, and diplomacy with other nations.
    ...
Thomas Jefferson summed up the noninterventionist foreign policy position perfectly in his 1801 inaugural address: "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none." Washington similarly urged that we must, "Act for ourselves and not for others," by forming an "American character wholly free of foreign attachments." "

Ron Paul on Peace and Freedom
    by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.
"If you recognize the line of thinking in this set of beliefs, it might be because you have read the Federalist Papers, the writings of Thomas Jefferson or George Washington or James Madison, or examined the philosophical origins of the American Revolution. Or you might have followed the debates that took place in the presidential election of 1800, in which this view emerged triumphant. Or perhaps you read the writings of the free traders prior to the Civil War, or the opponents of the War on Spain, or those who warned of entering World War I.
"Or perhaps you have read the speeches and books against FDR's New Deal: the same group warned of the devastating consequences of World War II. Or maybe, in more recent history, you understood the animating principles behind the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994: a generation had turned away from all forms of foreign and domestic "nation building."
"Not only does this Paulian view have a precedent in American history; it sums up the very core of what is distinctive about the American contribution to political ideas."

Iraq war

Some people have expressed concern about Dr. Paul's promise to withdraw from Iraq within a short time after being elected. The following opinion piece by Brigadier General Jimmy L. Cash has been circulating widely among the neocon crowd to justify a prolonged war against the entirety of Islam:

The article is full of sweeping generalizations and bold inconsistencies. Though he rightly points out that the U.S. was intended to be a Republic, not a Democracy, he then concludes that we must democratize the Middle East by force! If democracy has caused the U.S. to degenerate, as General Cash claims, then why does he think democratization is essential for the Middle East? This astonishing conclusion defies all logic.

General Cash's quest for a prolonged war on Islam has its roots in the speculative theory of a "Clash of Civilizations" promoted by historian Samuel Huntington. Huntington's theory is by no means accepted as truth by other historians and political scientists. See the following article that outlines Huntington's theory, then read the "Criticism" section:

    Clash of Civilizations
"In his book, Huntington relies mostly on anecdotal evidence. Despite
his expectations, more rigorous empirical studies have not shown any
particular increase in the frequency of intercivilizational conflicts
in the post-Cold War period. [3] In fact, regional war and conflict
spiked immediately after the end of Cold War, then it has declined
slowly and steady since then. However, what proportion of existing
conflict can be attributed to "intercivilizational conflict" and
whether such conflict increase in proportion to the overall conflict
    would remain to be seen.
    ...
Some also see Huntington's thesis as creating a self-fulfilling
prophecy and reasserting differences between civilizations.
    ...
The Clash of Civilizations thesis may also be regarded as an example
of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The ideas of Huntington and Bernard
Lewis were already influential among American neoconservative figures
such as Vice President Dick Cheney prior to September 11, 2001
    "

This last point is especially worth noting. It is Ron Paul's claim, backed up by official CIA reports on the phenomenon of "blowback" (the unintended consequences of international aggression reflecting back on the aggressor country), that Middle Eastern terrorism has increased within the past 10 years in direct response to the violence the U.S. has inflicted on that region. Other reports confirm that the Iraq war has drawn Muslim extremists to Iraq like a magnet, further suppressing moderate Islamic voices in the region.

Following are excerpts from Ron Paul's assessment of our war in Iraq and why it has never served legitimate U.S. interests:

    Why We Fight
HON. RON PAUL OF TEXAS BEFORE THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES September 8, 2005
"Many reasons have been given for why we fight and our youth
must die in Iraq. The reasons now given for why we must continue this
war bear no resemblance to the reasons given to gain the support of the
American people and the United States Congress prior to our invasion in
March of 2003. Before the war, we were told we faced an imminent
threat to our national security from Saddam Hussein. This rationale,
now proven grossly mistaken, has been changed. Now we're told we must
honor the fallen by "completing the mission." To do otherwise would
demean the sacrifice of those who have died or been wounded. Any lack
of support for "completing the mission" is said, by the promoters of
the war, to be unpatriotic, un-American, and detrimental to the troops.
They insist the only way one can support the troops is to never waver
on the policy of nation building, no matter how ill-founded that policy
may be. The obvious flaw in this argument is that the mission, of
which they so reverently speak, has changed constantly from the very
    beginning.
Though most people think this war started in March of 2003, the seeds
were sown many years before. The actual military conflict, involving
U.S. troops against Iraq, began in January 1991. The prelude to this
actually dates back over a hundred years, when the value of Middle East
oil was recognized by the industrialized West.
    ...
The administration repeatedly pumped out alarming propaganda that
Saddam Hussein was a threat to us with his weapons of mass destruction,
meaning nuclear, biological, and chemical. Since we helped Saddam
Hussein obtain biological and chemical weapons in the 1980s, we assumed
that he had maintained a large supply-- which of course turned out not
to be true. The people, frightened by 9/11, easily accepted these
    fear-mongering charges.
    ...
We not only supported Saddam Hussein against Iran, we also supported
Osama bin Laden in the 1980s-- aggravating the situation in the Middle
East and causing unintended consequences. With CIA assistance we
helped develop the educational program to radicalize Islamic youth in
many Arab nations, especially in Saudi Arabia to fight the Soviets. We
even provided a nuclear reactor to Iran in 1967-- which today leads us
to threaten another war. All of this has come back to haunt us.
Meddling in the affairs of others has consequences.
    ...
The fact that Congress is not permitted under the Constitution to
transfer the war power to a president was ignored. Only Congress can
declare war, if we were inclined to follow the rule of law. To add
insult to injury, HJ RES 114 cited United Nations resolutions as
justifications for the war. Ignoring the Constitution while using the
UN to justify the war showed callous disregard for the restraints
carefully written in the Constitution. The authors deliberately wanted
to make war difficult to enter without legislative debate, and they
purposely kept the responsibility out of the hands of the executive
branch. Surely they never dreamed an international government would
have influence over our foreign policy or tell us when we should enter
    into armed conflict.
    ...
The most important misjudgment regarding Iraq that must be dealt with
is the charge that Muslim terrorists attack us out of envy for our
freedoms, our prosperity, and our way of life. There is no evidence
this is the case. On the contrary, those who have extensively
researched this issue conclude that the #1 reason suicide terrorists
attack anywhere in the world is because their land is occupied by a
foreign military power. Pretending otherwise and constantly expanding
our military presence in more Arab and Muslim countries as we have
since 1990 has only increased the danger of more attacks on our soil,
as well as in those countries that have allied themselves with us. If
we deny this truth we do so at our own peril.
    "

Imagine what Americans might feel if some country dropped depleted uranium weapons on our land, effectively poisoning it for thousands of years and causing an epidemic of cancers and horrendous birth defects -- which is what has happened to Iraq and Afghanistan. For more information on the use of depleted uranium ammunition and its effects, I recently wrote an article on this subject (which was intended primarily for readers affiliated with the alternative health professions):

Unlike the effect of nuclear bombs, which undergo nuclear fission/fusion reactions that produce radioactive isotopes that decay relatively quickly, the uranium oxide dust that results from depleted uranium weaponry lingers with a half life of 4.47 billion years! THAT IS NOT A MISPRINT. It is a heavy-metal toxin that remains radioactive forever, for all practical purposes. It is a major factor in the so- called "Gulf War Syndrome" that affects a large percentage of returning veterans.

The media is suppressing this issue -- the phrase "depleted uranium" is never mentioned. But there is a huge amount of information about this topic on the Internet. Citizens in other countries are aware of it. Other governments are certainly aware of it, and are threatening to use this knowledge as the basis of claims that U.S. leaders knowingly and intentionally violated the Geneva Conventions, setting the U.S. up for a loss of sovereignty in response to international outrage. Ron Paul knows about this international outrage and potential loss of U.S. sovereignty; he has served on the House Committee for International Relations for many years. General Cash would have the U.S. play right into the hands of internationalists whose ultimate game plan is to lure the U.S. into a Middle East war it cannot win, and which is guaranteed to inflame world opinion to demand that the U.S. be punished and hobbled, much as Germany was at the end of WWII. Is this what we all want?

Regarding the U.S. dependence on foreign oil, which Jim Cash claims is a reason we have no choice but to wage war on the Middle East:

    The Peak Oil Myth
    by Dr. Stanley Monteith
""In a letter published in the February 12th (2000-ed)
New York Times, Senator Frank Murkowski (R-AK), chairman of the
Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, identified
'the main problem,' not as a lack of domestic resources, but as 'the
administration's efforts to send oil development out of this
country through taxes, environmental decisions and bad policy.'
After noting that more than half our oil comes from foreign
countries and that our wells are being shut down (by government
    decree-ed) Murkowski candidly stated:
'We've allowed that to happen, and we look a little foolish
    complaining of the consequences.'"[13]
    ...
The article continued: "The United States is awash in energy
resources and our dangerous dependence on foreign sources could be
ended simply by allowing the development of those resources in a free
enterprise environment. . . . Not only has the United States not
depleted its proved reserves of oil, but those reserves actually
increased over a period of decades, the result of both new
discoveries and changing economic and technological conditions.
    "
[rw: this is very similar to Ron Paul's position.
    ]

Gold finds our deep hot biosphere teeming with life -- and controversy
    by David Brand
"Writes Gold: "In my view, hydrocarbons are not biology reworked by
geology (as the traditional view would hold) but rather geology
reworked by biology. In other words, hydrocarbons are primordial, but
as they upwell into Earth's outer crust microbial life invades."
Reviewing the book, Publishers Weekly noted that "if Gold is right,
the planet's oil reserves are far larger than policy-makers expect...
moreover, astronomers hoping for extraterrestrial contacts might want
to stop seeking life on other planets and inquire about life in them."
    "

False-flag terrorism

The following article explains how, during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the late 1970's and 1980's, the CIA helped to train mujahideen fighters to repel the Soviets from Afghanistan. After the Soviets left in defeat, these mujahideen, becoming what is now known as "Al Qaeda", continued to indirectly serve U.S. agendas in central Asia: destabilizing other nations competing for oil reserves, control of the lucrative heroin trade, and carrying out false-flag terrorist operations (operations that appear to be perpetrated by one group, that are actually controlled by another) that may ultimately still be under CIA control.

    Who Is Osama Bin Laden?
by Michel Chossudovsky, Professor of Economics, University of Ottawa
"With the active encouragement of the CIA and Pakistan's ISI
[Inter Services Intelligence], who wanted to turn the Afghan jihad
into a global war waged by all Muslim states against the Soviet Union,
some 35,000 Muslim radicals from 40 Islamic countries joined
Afghanistan's fight between 1982 and 1992. Tens of thousands more came
to study in Pakistani madrasahs. Eventually more than 100,000 foreign
Muslim radicals were directly influenced by the Afghan jihad.3
The Islamic "jihad" was supported by the United States and Saudi Arabia
with a significant part of the funding generated from the Golden Crescent
    drug trade...
***The ISI's extensive intelligence military-network was not dismantled in
the wake of the Cold War. The CIA continued to support the Islamic "jihad"
    out of Pakistan.***
    "

To this day, the U.S. continues to fund and control various radical Islamic groups to further its own commercial and military agendas in the Middle East and Asia. To view "Al Qaeda" as the enemy that we must destroy is naive, when Al Qaeda was a creation of the American CIA from the very beginning and continues to be used as a covert tool of destabilization in central Asia that serves U.S. commercial interests. The situation is far more complex and devious that most Americans suspect. Ron Paul has rightly pointed out that these devious ploys to destabilize the rest of the world for U.S. commercial gain has earned the U.S. much hatred; moreover, the American Empire has become too expensive to maintain and is bankrupting our economy, just as happened to ancient Rome. It is time that the U.S. pay attention to the warnings of our Founding Fathers to avoid foreign entanglements and focus on defending our own borders.

Support among military personnel

Following is a reference list of webpages confirming high support for Ron paul among military personnel. This would not be true if Dr. Paul were a "pacifist", as he has been erroneously labeled by some critics. He is for a strong defense of the USA; however, he insists that according to the Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war. He is opposed to overseas military interventionism, which policy has aggravated the diplomatic isolation of the U.S. over the past decades.

  • Military Favors Ron Paul Over McCain
"The US Federal Election Commission has released the Selected Presidential Reports for the 2007 July Quarterly, and there are a few surprises. No surprise, of course, is that people in the armed services and veterans overwhelmingly support the Republican Party. However, after digging through individual candidates' contributions by employers, we find an elating (or disturbing, if you're rooting for Rudy McRomney) trend. The breakdown? Here you go.
    ...
"One might jump to the conclusion that the troops are tired and demoralized and angry to be fighting in the desert sand, and willing to leap on the only Republican candidate who wants an immediate end to the war. But that's an insufficient explanation, since veterans favor Ron Paul as well.
"Our military forces have a strong tradition of valorization and an implicit belief that they have served to protect the freedom of private citizens in the United States. So profound is this belief that it ranks as the #1 reason that veterans and active duty say they joined (even though education ranks as the #1 reason prior to enlistment)."
[rw: see especially the chart with total donations from military personnel to each Republican candidate. By this measure, Ron Paul is the clear winner. These figures are consistent with numbers posted elsewhere, see article below.]

Can he win? -- Internet statistics of search popularity of major candidates

Google Trends provides a feature that allows a user to track statistics on specific search terms over time. I entered in the search terms "ron paul, mitt romney, john mccain, rudy giuliani, mike huckabee":

Here are the results:

  • The number of Internet searches for Dr. Paul has been steadily increasing since July 2007, and is over double that of any other candidate. These results are consistent with the fact that the Ron Paul campaign has received $28 million in donations during 2007, almost exclusively in the form of small donations from individuals.
  • The lower graph plots the number of times a candidate in mentioned in a news media article. Note that Ron Paul receives significantly less media coverage than any other candidate.
  • The combination of these two statistics proves beyond a doubt that Dr. Paul's candidacy has broad grassroots support and that the media is engaged in a systematic suppression of his campaign. This also corroborates claims of massive election fraud in state primaries and caucuses to date. (See also results of Republican straw polls around the country.)
  • The red lines track Mike Huckabee's campaign. Note that the lower red line roughly parallels the upper line, strongly suggesting that Mike Huckabee's popularity is predominantly a creation of the media.

Here is a comparison of search popularity for Ron Paul relative to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton:

  • If Ron Paul should win the Republican nomination, these Internet statistics strongly suggest that Ron Paul is the only candidate who stands a good chance of winning against any Democratic candidate. (Barring massive election fraud.)
  • 70% of the American public has access to the Internet, so these statistics reflect a large sampling of public interest in candidates' campaigns.

Comprehensive Economic Revitalization Plan

Ron Paul has stated in previous interviews that his goal of abolishing the IRS and Federal Reserve will need to be accomplished gradually, with a transition period to ensure that our economy functions smoothly. Following is an outline of how the transition would be accomplished. None of the other Presidential candidates has demonstrated such a comprehensive understanding of what ails our economy and how to fix it. Under the current administration, the tired old remedy of simply throwing more money at Wall Street and into the housing market is failing and is causing international investors to flee from the U.S. dollar, as it becomes increasingly worthless.

    Comprehensive Economic Revitalization Plan
    by Ron Paul
    "The Four-Point Plan:
*Tax Reform: Reduce the tax burden and eliminate taxes that punish
investment and savings, including job-killing corporate taxes.
*Spending Reform: Eliminate wasteful spending. Reduce overseas commitments.
Freeze all non-defense, non-entitlement spending at current levels.
*Monetary Policy Reform: Expand openness at the Federal Reserve and require
the Fed to televise its meetings. Return value to our money.
*Regulatory Reform: Repeal Sarbanes/Oxley regulations that push companies
to seek capital outside of US markets. Stop restricting community banks
    from fostering local economic growth.
